Ability is now moving on to the next phase of mapping, mapping University campuses. We have spent the month of May mapping out over 500 buildings and streets and Nairobi to try and find out how accessible they are for everyone, especially for people with disabilities. And now, we want to focus on mapping out 20 university campuses in the exact same way. Are our university campuses accommodating students with disabilities? Is it comfortable and safe to move across different buildings across our campuses? Could it be that the lack of universal design and inclusive spaces within our campuses is contributing to some students with disabilities not applying for higher education? Which of our campuses have made, or are making good progress in applying universal design already? Below is the list of campuses we will be mapping:
- University of Nairobi (main campus)
- University of Nairobi (Kabete campus 1)
- University of Nairobi (Kabete campus 2)
- University of Nairobi (Chiromo campus)
- University of Nairobi (Mombasa campus)
- JKUATKenyatta University (main campus)
- Kenyatta University (Mombasa campus)
- Daystar University (Nairobi campus)
- Daystar University (Athi River campus)
- Strathmore University
- USIU
- Technical University of Kenya
- Multimedia University
- Catholic University
- Nazarene University
- Hekima University
- Maseno University
- Riara University
- Kenya School of Law
This time around, as you may know, we are turning this into a challenge that students who belong to their respective campuses have applied to compete in. Traditionally, Ability has held their training sessions at our office in Nairobi where we invite participants to attend, but today we held an online training that participants streamed in through our Facebook LIVE feed. This was a big success for us and we hope that it will be the first of many online training sessions. Below are part one and part two of the session which was split up because of a brief drop in signal.
